Blown and hot-sculpted Chalcedony glass
Handblown glass vessel resting within a spiraling amber vortex. The large, flattened form with a mysterious window appears to be collapsing but suspended in time. Striated Chalcedony colors in earthy rainbow hues of blue, amber, yellow, and purple.
As part of the Vortex Series, this spiraling glass form evokes abstract themes of time and movement, like a contorted twist in the fabric of space-time. Hot glass is shaped through timing and gravity, and here a vortex-like motion wraps around the vessel, with gravity influencing its flow much like ocean currents moving objects along curved paths through water.
As the glass form is influenced by timing and gravity, flowing striations of color across the surface also capture a sense of movement before being frozen in time as the glass cools from liquid to solid. After spending many years melting an ancient Italian glass formula famously known as Chalcedony, this formula has a complicated process that can produce a myriad of color reactions and layered effects through precise heating and cooling processes.
